Welcome Address
EUPSA-BAPS JOINT CONGRESS
13th Congress of the European Paediatric Surgeons´ Association (EUPSA)
59th Congress of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS)

Dear Colleagues,
for the second time EUPSA and BAPS have decided to have their Congresses joint and have accepted the proposal of holding it in Rome, the Italian Capital, the Eternal City.

It is a real honour and privilege for me to serve as Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and, together with my Team, to welcome you all in Rome next June 2012.

Since ever, people from all countries like to be guest of this wonderful City. For this event, more than 1000 participants are expected to come from 80-90 countries all over the world and we believe that they will surely find here the perfect settings for their scientific works, social activities and tourism opportunities.

The Auditorium Parco della Musica (www.auditorium.com) is the location we have chosen for this extraordinary event: this splendid architectural masterpiece by Renzo Piano is located at 15’ minutes walking distance from the very centre of the City and will offer us a unique staging for our scientific programme.

The quality of the scientific papers will be guaranteed by the continuous and tough support of the two Scientific Committees that are already working to set a very high-level scientific programme. From Wednesday until Saturday, scientific sessions, organizational meetings, lectures, “Meet the Experts Lunches”, satellite symposia and courses will be running.

The “19th International Paediatric Colorectal Club Meeting”  ( (visit the website) ) will take place at the “Aula Urbaniana” close to the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th while the “7th Interactive Practical Course on Paediatric Reconstructive Urology” organized by Prof. Paolo Caione inside our Institution will be on Tuesday 12th (www.ospedalebambinogesu.it).
As a matter of fact, we are planning a Paediatric Surgery Week in Rome!

The Welcome Reception will take place on Wednesday 13th at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the President Reception on Thursday 14th at Palazzo Brancaccio and the Annual Dinner at Terrazza Caffarelli on Saturday 16th . These events will give you the opportunity to taste, a “bite” of the Italian history, culture and cuisine.

The Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital is supporting us to realize this Congress which pursue the same goals of care and promotion of the little patient’s health, that both Associations want to achieve.

To EUPSA and BAPS Executive Boards all my personal thanks for the chance they gave me to host this Congress in Rome and the unfailing support they are putting into the organization.

My Team and I are committed to give all our best in order to promote this International Congress, for the diffusion of modern scientific information and to offer everybody the opportunity of developing and sharing longlasting friendships.

Arrivederci a Roma!
Dr Massimo Rivosecchi

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I am looking forward to welcome you in Rome during the 13th EUPSA Congress joint with the 59th Congress of the BAPS.

Three years have passed since our last joint meeting.
The total and friendly cooperation we had between our respective Executive Boards promises this year an outstanding meeting with an excellent scientific programme and information-sharing opportunities.

We will continue our highly successful congress-format with a lot of pre-congress Courses, Meet the Expert Luncheons, Post Graduate Courses organized by our colleagues, all expert in their field.
The world becomes smaller and international cooperation, common projects and personal contacts are vital in academic life and research.
Based on the numerous abstracts from colleagues of all continents, we will have a scientific program of very high level giving attention to all pediatric surgical fields .Oral presentations and poster sessions will offer numerous possibilities for investigators -especially young surgeons- to present their work: don’t forget to give to them also the opportunity to join us in Rome for an inspiring and enriching congress.

I am grateful to the local organising committee chaired by Professor Massimo Rivosecchi to provide us, without any doubt, a memorable conference in such historic and beautiful place.

Jean Michel GUYS
President of EUPSA

On behalf of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons
I welcome you to this congress in Rome with our friends and colleagues in EUPSA. This is the second joint congress, the first having been in Graz in 2009. That congress was a remarkable success. All of us in BAPS are very much looking forward to meeting with EUPSA once again for our second joint congress. This is the 59th BAPS Congress and the 13th of EUPSA.

As BAPS approaches its 60th anniversary we aim to combine the strengths of both societies in a great meeting in one of the greatest European cities, Rome, La Città Eterna - the Eternal City. Massimo Rivosecchi and his local organising team have arranged a very exciting social programme to combine with the excellent scientific programme and courses that are planned.

This is the third visit of BAPS to Italy. The first was to Genoa in 1971 (before I had embarked on a career in Paediatric Surgery). In 2000, in Sorrento, we had one of our best attended and enjoyable congresses. I have no doubt that the city of Romulus and Remus will attract a record attendance from both societies who will visit not only to attend the congress but to enjoy the arts, cuisine and fashion of this magnificent ancient city.

I am indebted to Massimo and his colleagues who have worked hard with the executives of both organisations to ensure that this will be a most successful congress.
We welcome you all. Enjoy Rome and this joint congress!

Gordon MacKinlay
President of BAPS
