Welcome Address – Bern 2010 |
|
|
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 11th European Congress of Paediatric Surgery in Berne, the capital of Switzerland. The largely medieval old town of Berne has been recognised by UNESCO as a cultural world heritage site. The old town has 6 kilometres of arcades and boasts one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe.
EUPSA is continuing to grow and thrive. The total membership is fast approaching 1,000 members.
This year 496 abstracts submitted from around the world promises to produce an excellent Scientific Programme. In addition to the laparoscopic, oncology and traumatology courses, the Symposium on Vesicoureteral Reflux and Meet the Expert Lunches, we will also have a common session with nurses on pain management as well as lectures on Prevention of Injury in Childhood.
At the time of the EUPSA meeting, WOFAPS is organising a summit meeting of the Presidents or their representatives, of BAPS, EUPSA, APSA, AAP, CAPS, PAPS and WOFAPS. The main purpose of this summit meeting would be to pool resources from these organisations to help our colleagues in the developing world to improve the surgical care of children.
I am grateful to the local organising committee chaired by Professor Zacharias Zachariou for arranging what, I have no doubt will be a very successful and memorable conference, both scientifically and socially. I hope that the EUPSA meeting in Berne through both the formal sessions, and especially through the informal gatherings, provide a wonderful opportunity for paediatric surgeons to have a fruitful exchange of ideas, provide new research collaborators and meet old friends.
I wish all delegates and accompanying persons an interesting, educational and enjoyable congress.
Prem Puri
President
Dear EUPSA Members, colleagues and guests,
You are cordially invited to attend the 11th European Congress of Paediatric Surgery in Berne, the capital of Switzerland.
We are honoured to host the EUPSA Congress at the Congress&Culture-Centre-Allegro, a complex in the middle of the town with a wonderful panorama of the Bernese Alps.
The city of Berne was founded 1191 in a loop of the river Aare and developed into a prosperous town, becoming the capital of Switzerland in 1848. The old town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site with important sights, but also little alcoves, towers and arcades. More than 50 fountains in the old town are prominent not only by their colourful figures but each one of them has a story to tell.
The University of Berne was founded in 1834 taking over the so called "Hohe Schule" an institution for theological studies existing since the introduction of the Reformation 1528. Nowadays approximately 25.000 students are enrolled in the 8 faculties of our University.
We carefully selected the social program for you and the accompanying persons offering visits to some of the main attractions within the city and the surrounding Swiss Alps. The highlight of the social program will be the annual Dinner on the ship "Bubenberg" on the lake of Thun with a panoramic view of the famous 3000m high mountains "Mönch – Eiger – Jungfrau"
Meanwhile the EUPSA Congress is one of the most important Congresses in Paediatric Surgery worldwide, covering the entire field of our subject. The Oncology and Laparoscopy courses, on Wednesday June 2nd, are organized by faculties consisting of experts in these fields. For the first time we offer in Berne a new course on Paediatric Skeletal Traumatology with hands-on workshops in Intramedullary Nailing. In the six "Meet the Expert Lunches" leading international experts present the state of the art on different subjects with ample time for discussion.
On Thursday, June 3rd and Friday, June 4th a parallel congress of the Academic Association of Paediatric Care will take place, where the academic work of our very important partners, the nursing colleagues, is presented and discussed. Please inform and encourage your nursing staff to register. This year we have the privilege of including in our meeting the first common session with this Association on the subject of Pain Management in Children. http://www.kinderkliniken.insel.ch/14333.html?&L=1
Please take advantage of our Kids-club. All children older than 5 years can stay in our nursery from 8.00am – 5.00pm. For children over 9 years we will organize guided excursions during the 3 days of the congress.
In advance I wish to thank everybody who has contributed for the success of this congress, especially the industry representatives for their support.
The local organizing committee promises a congress organised with Swiss precision as well as hearty hospitality and I wish all participants an interesting and informative congress with constructive interchange of ideas.
